How to Tell Genuine PPF from Cheap or Fake Film: 9 Checks to Make Before You Pay in Bangalore

You can tell genuine PPF from cheap film before you pay by checking three things: that the quote names a specific TPU product and tier (not "premium imported film"), that the warranty is issued or registered by the film manufacturer and can be verified with them directly, and that the studio will let you see the film itself — the roll label and a sample swatch — and state its thickness in writing. Cheap film usually reveals itself within months as yellowing, cracking, haze or lifting edges, by which point the money is spent and the film is on your car.

Three things make it a real problem. PPF is invisible on the car, so at handover a good film and a poor film look identical. The price gap is large, so a cheaper quote is tempting. And words like "imported", "German" and "lifetime warranty" cost nothing to print on a quote and are rarely checked. The honest fix is not trusting any studio's word — including ours — but knowing what to ask for and verifying it independently.

A credible quote says which film — brand, product line and tier — is going on your car. "Premium PPF" is a category, not a specification. If a studio is vague when asked directly, that alone is worth weighing against other studios.

Premium film is TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane). Cheaper PVC-based or hybrid films are stiffer and are more commonly linked to yellowing and cracking under strong sun. Ask for the material in writing on the quote or job card. See the full buyer's guide for why material comes first.

Ask to see the roll or its packaging before the job starts: the label should show the product name and the manufacturer, and a batch or roll number can be noted on your job card. A studio confident in its film will show you; reluctance is information. This does not prove authenticity on its own, which is why the next check exists.

This is the strongest check. Ask whether the film warranty is registered in your name with the manufacturer, and contact the manufacturer or its Indian distributor yourself with the details to confirm it. A warranty that exists only as a studio letterhead is a promise from a business that could close; a manufacturer-backed, transferable warranty is a promise from a second party. Quality PPF is roughly 8 mil (about 200 microns). Studios selling good film state the thickness without hesitation. Be cautious of quotes that quote only a warranty number or a marketing term. Thickness is what absorbs a stone chip — see how PPF prevents scratches.

Ask for an offcut of the exact film. Three simple things to look at: clarity (hold it against a light or your phone screen — good film is glass-clear, not milky), surface texture (an orange-peel or dimpled look can show up as visible texture on the finished car), and flexibility (premium TPU stretches and recovers; brittle film does not). Ask about the self-healing topcoat, and if a warm-water demonstration on a swatch is offered, watch a light scratch fade. Never test scratches or heat on your own paint.

Good film installed poorly wastes the film. Ask for: paint correction before installation, plotter-cut panels for your model with edges wrapped, a dedicated dust-controlled bay, and a written workmanship warranty separate from the film warranty. A studio confident in its work offers a follow-up inspection within the first few weeks to check for edge lifting or bubbling while it can still be fixed cleanly. If aftercare is not mentioned, ask.

These are the commonly reported signs of low-quality film, especially on light-coloured cars parked outdoors in Bangalore's sun and monsoon:

• Yellowing — most visible on white, silver and pearl paint.
• Haze or a cloudy, milky look that does not wash off.
• Cracking or peeling at edges and curves.
• Staining where bird droppings, tar or tree sap sat on the surface.
• Lifting edges and adhesive lines, often from poor prep or a dusty install.

If you already have film you doubt, ask the installer for the film name and warranty documents, get an independent inspection, and do not have it stripped in a hurry — removal should be done carefully to protect the paint underneath.

No checklist can prove authenticity from the outside: paperwork can be misleading and a studio can say anything.
