Tree Sap on Your Car: How to Remove It Without Scratching the Paint
The Short Answer
Remove tree sap while it is still soft. Wash the area with car shampoo and warm water, then soften any remaining sap with a dedicated sap or tar remover on a microfibre and lift it off. Never scrape, use a blade, or scrub with a household cleaner. Hardened sap that has been on for weeks may need clay treatment or polishing by a professional.
Why Sap Is a Problem in Bangalore
Many of Bangalore's residential roads, from Jayanagar and Indiranagar to Koramangala's blocks, are lined with large trees, and street or under-tree parking is common. Sap drips onto the car, and in the heat it hardens and bonds to the clear coat. Over time it can stain or etch the paint, and it collects dust that scratches the surface when wiped off carelessly.

How to Remove Fresh Sap
- Wash first. Clean the area with car shampoo and water to remove loose dirt.
- Soften the sap. Apply a dedicated sap or tar remover to a microfibre cloth and hold it on the spot for a minute.
- Lift it. Gently wipe in one direction, refolding the cloth to a clean side as you go.
- Rinse and dry. Wash the area again so no remover is left on the paint.
Test any product on a small, hidden area first.
Hardened Sap and What Never to Use
Sap that has been on for weeks becomes hard and glassy. Don't attack it with a fingernail, a blade, steel wool, nail polish remover or kitchen cleaners. They will scratch or soften the clear coat. A professional can remove hardened sap with clay treatment and, if it has left a mark, machine polishing. See how paint correction works.
How to Stop Sap Bonding to Your Paint
- Ceramic coating makes the surface slick, so sap bonds less and washes off more easily. More on ceramic coating.
- PPF gives the paint a sacrificial layer, so any staining happens on the film, not the paint. More on PPF.
- Parking: where you can, avoid parking directly under heavily dripping trees, and wash the car regularly in the dry months when sap is worst.
