What Is PPF Coating? How Paint Protection Film Works, How It Is Installed and How Long It Lasts
PPF Coating, in One Paragraph
PPF stands for paint protection film. It is a clear (or coloured) layer of thermoplastic polyurethane, or TPU, applied over your car's paint. People often call it "PPF coating", but it is a film, not a liquid. It is thick and flexible enough to absorb stone chips, light scrapes and swirl marks, and its top layer heals fine scratches with heat. Your paint underneath stays as it left the factory.

What Is Inside the Film
- Self-healing topcoat: a clear coat that flows back into shape when warmed by the sun or warm water, so fine wash marks disappear.
- TPU layer: the thick, elastic body of the film. This is what absorbs the energy of a stone chip.
- Adhesive: a pressure-sensitive layer that bonds to the paint and can be removed cleanly by a professional.
- Release liner: peeled off during installation.
Quality PPF is TPU. Cheaper films made from PVC are stiffer, yellow faster and can crack. That difference is why the film name matters. More in types of PPF: gloss, matte and self-healing.
What PPF Protects Against (and What It Does Not)
It protects against: stone chips, light scratches and scrapes, swirl marks from washing, bird droppings and tree sap etching, insect stains, UV fading and road tar.
It does not stop: dents from a real impact, deep key scratches that cut through the film, or damage to panels that are not covered. Read does PPF prevent dents? for the honest detail.

How PPF Is Installed, Step by Step
- Wash and decontaminate. Clay and chemical decontamination remove bonded grit.
- Paint correction. Machine polishing removes swirls and wash marks, because anything left on the paint is sealed under the film.
- Panel wipe. Strips polishing oils so the adhesive bonds properly.
- Plotter-cut patterns. Software cuts the film to your exact model, so no blade touches your paint.
- Application. The film is floated on with a slip solution, positioned, and squeegeed out.
- Edges wrapped. Film is tucked around panel edges for a seamless look and less lifting.
- Curing. The car rests indoors while the adhesive settles. No pressure washing for the first days.
This is the process we follow at Bremen Protect on every car. Our before, during and after checklist covers what to expect as an owner.
Finishes: Gloss, Black and Satin
Clear gloss film is close to invisible and keeps the factory look. Black film gives a deep gloss black finish. Satin film turns a gloss car satin, and protects cars that are already matte from the factory. We offer Hyper Gloss, Hyper Black and Satin Finish PPF.
How Long PPF Lasts
A quality TPU film, installed well and washed with care, lasts for the length of its warranty. The films we fit carry up to a 10-year warranty. Heat, harsh brushes and strong chemicals shorten film life, which is why aftercare matters. Our PPF maintenance checklist keeps it simple.
